Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow

About: Part radio, part comic, this unique storytelling series unites the two finest forms of storytelling: radio and pictures. Synopsis: For Michelle Law, the signs of alopecia started emerging when she was a baby, but it wasn’t until the beginning of high school that she lost her hair entirely. Since that time, her feelings have evolved toward the unpredictability of this condition, which manifests in parallel with moments of deep psychological change. A story about transformation and the psychological fallout of overt physical change that touches on ideas of gender, beauty and desirability. – From ABC Radio National Website Joff’s Notes: It’s seems that 2015 led me to be the Law family’s personal composer. Purely by chance, they’re my Medicis. I use this opportunity to tie in the same sound palate of ‘The Family Law’ to this little story as part of Radio With Pictures

Another Country

Another Country Trailer About: Another Country is an incredible documentary feature everyone should definitely watch. Synopsis: “Molly Reynolds’ Another Country is the stunning culmination of the critically acclaimed Country suite (featuring her Still Our Country – Reflections on a Culture, MIFF 2014; and Rolf de Heer’s Charlie’s Country). Narrated and guided by Gulpilil himself, Another Country is an attempt to make sense of the contradictions of the modern Indigenous experience – a sobering, searing though often humorous account of a people forced to change too fast and too far, and then left to fade by those who had wrought that change.” – from MIFF website, 2015. Snake Sheila

Synopsis Imagine, you get in your car, you turn the key but there’s a hissing noise coming from under the bonnet. And it’s NOT the radiator. You lift the bonnet to reveal… two enormous carpet pythons making out. S-s-s-snakes! They seem to be springing up everywhere in Brisbane of late but there’s no need to panic: the River City unofficially has the most snakecatchers in the world. Snake Sheila will follow professional snake-catching experts including Julia Baker (aka ‘Snake Sheila’), and her Scottish apprentice and real-life partner, ‘Johnny Bagpipes’, over one snake season where they catch some of Australia’s riskiest reptiles. About Snake Sheila is a 10 x 30min factual TV series for Animal Planet international. It’s a fun factual show from the cool creative team ‘Flickchicks’ in Brisbane. Joff’s Notes Snake Sheila is turning out great -it’s currently on air internationally (‘Snake Boss’ in Australia). I was commissioned to write a theme and a small library based on the theme music to scatter throughout the series. The main approach for the titles was to bring out the best bit of the show – Julia Baker (THE Snake Sheila). It need to be cool, fun, and a bit rock n roll. We decided to avoid playing up the ‘danger of the snakes’ or the ‘mission’ angles for various reasons. I hope to share some audio

Timothy

More on Timothy soon. I insist that you check it out 9:30pm Wednesday 8th October on ABC. About: Melinda (Denise Scott) and Colin Garrett’s (Peter Rowsthorn) 35-year-old son Timothy (Stephen Curry) has returned to Wollongong. Unfortunately, his homecoming is under less than stellar circumstances, the result of bankruptcy and a mental breakdown in his former life as a corporate high-flyer in Hong Kong. Apart from permanently sporting an old dressing gown, Timothy doesn’t show many signs of the breakdown that landed him back in Wollongong. Timothy’s therapist, however, insists that he is very fragile. He drives his mother Melinda up the wall, rearranging her entire household, including the items in the kitchen according to buoyancy. He practices martial arts on the clothes line and only eats freshly killed Silver Carp which has to be procured on the Asian black market. As much as Melinda would like the therapist to be wrong, she discovers that whenever she tries to gently “nudge” Timothy to change his ways, he is indeed worryingly delicate. The road to recovery is long. That is, if recovery ever comes at all. And the road is paved with relapses, murdered Silver Carp and grandchildren who may never be able to visit again. Joff’s Notes: Timothy is a beautiful comedy I loved right from the script stage. More
